Hegger vs. Mäckler

A discussion on the future of building with Prof. Christoph Mäckler and Prof. Manfred Hegger

What gives construction and modernization a feasible future in the age of sustainability? We discussed the topic with architecture professors Manfred Hegger and Christoph Mäckler. Hegger holds the Chair for “Design and Energy Efficient Construction” at Damrstadt’s Technical University, is President of DGNB, the German Sustainable Building Council; with his Hegger Hegger Schleiff company he has realized, among other things, technically innovative buildings for the SMA corporation, which is very successful in the solar market. Mäckler, the architect who designed, for example, the Opernturm in his hometown of Frankfurt/Main, has long since been prioritizing durable materials and buildings that can be used flexibly. At Dortmund’s Technical University he founded the “German Institute for the Art of Urban Design”, which, among other things, is working on a research project entitled “Cityscape and Energy”.

Prof. Manfred Hegger:

„Our buildings have quality features at different levels of consideration and it is necessary to make these tangible, visible. That is not about to change so quickly. After all, in other areas of life, “the market” (be it users, owners, or investors) calls for greater transparency and tangibility as regards quality, user friendliness, efficiency and eco-friendliness.“

Prof. Christoph Mäckler:

„I have no time at all for certification. In Europe, it is always we Germans who stand ready to go when some decree or other is enacted and understand the significance of them, unless the idea is to take the curves out of bananas. However, it has always been in the interest of developers or later users to use a building efficiently. That has not just happened with certification.“
